If you received an unemployment check or direct deposit for benefits that you did not initiate, you may get a call, text, or email from someone trying to get some or all the money. Make sure you document the caller’s name and contact information if they claim to be from a state workforce agency and verify their information after the call.
If you are asked to send the money via wire transfer, cash, or gift card, this is always a scammer and you should not send them any money. If you can capture their name and/or contact number, this can be reported to the state workforce agency to help aid in their investigation.
