Unemployment fraud was rarely mentioned before 2020, but unprecedented strain on UI systems and increased benefits as a result of the pandemic were too much for bad actors to ignore. During the pandemic, fraud cases reached historical highs.
While the combined efforts of state agencies and employers has since helped decrease fraud (also known as identity theft) claims, as long as bad actors have data, they will continue to find ways to file fraudulent claims. Therefore, any data breach that exposes sensitive information can lead to an increase in fraud, including fraud directed at collecting unemployment benefits.
